Improvements in Milking Robots for Dairy Cow Welfare

Abstract: A key smart device in modern dairy farms, the milking robot significantly improves the management efficiency and economic benefits of the farms. Since its introduction, this technology has enabled the milking process to transition from the traditional human-centered way to a more animal-friendly practice, which makes the cows live more freely and happily, a step in the revolution in animal welfare. By mimicking the rhythm and intensity of natural calf milking, the milking robots enhance milk yield and quality, and prevent diseases such as mastitis, making the cows live a longer and healthier life. This study was based on recent papers and cases from the perspective of the 5F principles of animal welfare, focusing on the direct and indirect benefits in animal welfare for dairy cow and human-cow coexistence that have been brought by milking robots. Furthermore, this study provided insights into the future of the health management for cows and the improvements in modern farming practices.
