Effects of Astragalus Polysaccharide Combined with Yinhuang Soluble Powder on Immunity and Diseases in Neonatal Calves

Abstract

To determine the effects of astragalus polysaccharide(APS) combined with Yinhuang soluble powder on immunity and diseases of neonatal calves, 80 neonatal Holstein calves in good health were divided into 2 groups randomly(N=40). The calves in the experimental group were fed with 5 g APS powder and 3 g Yinhuang soluble powder for 7 consecutive days, while the control group was not given any medication. The immune-related indicators were measured at the 7th day and the incidence was observed within 3 weeks. Compared with control group, serum IL-2 concentration of calves in experimental groups increased 8.0% and TNF-α concentration decreased 16.0%. The distribution of T cell lymphocyte subsets improved, and the CD4/CD8 value increased 6.0%. Serum total protein and IgG increased 0.28 g/dL and 0.24 mg/ mL respectively. Incidence rate of calf diarrhea was significantly reduced 15.0% (P < 0.05) in low-risk farm within 7 days and 35.0% (P < 0.05) in high-risk farm within 8~21 d. For respiratory diseases,incidence and disease index were significantly reduced 30.0% (P < 0.05) in high-risk farm. APS combined with Yinhuang soluble powder can effectively improve the immunity of neonatal calves and reduce the incidence of respiratory diseases and diarrhea.
